Twisted Comet Tails and Spiral Sunspots
Birkeland currents and plasma pinches to think about.
A "twisted" tail on the comet surprised astronomy, again!
As the linked mainstream (Universe Today) atronomy article states: "But there's something going on with N3 Lulin [the comet], right now… Something very different. There's a twist in the tail! Check this out…"
And the article goes on: "Dr. Joe Brimacombe used a negative luminance frame to take a closer look at what's going on and discovered something quite out of the ordinary. First off, you'll notice an anti-tail - quite rare in itself - but if you take a look about halfway down the ion/dust tail, you'll see a very definite twist in the structure. It it rotating?"
Surprising?
Only if you deny the electromagnetic force, one of the Four Fundamental Forces of the Universe, the strongest force at a distance, has little role in space.
But for those who subscribe to the idea that electromagnetism is not only a Fundamental Force, but has a fundamental role in space, it's no surprise at all.
It might be a pleasant surprise to see your view of the Cosmos affirmed, once again, and isn't that getting to be old hat?
Yes, but considering the obstinance, and the obfiscation coming out of conventional astronomy, you can't get too many affirmations of Plasma Cosmology.
If my discussions with conventional astronomy interlocutors is any indication, the weight of the evidence will have to be CRUSHING before they will fully acknowledge how all encompassing electromagnetic forces are in the Universe.
So, bring on the evidence, pour it on, and lather it up.
The article demonstrates just how blind conventional astronomy is as the article states: "Right now there's absolutely no information available about what's going on in the tail - because what you're seeing is perhaps one of the most current pictures of the comet that can be found!"
There is plenty of information if you would consider Plasma Cosmology.

So, NASA has known about twisted sunspots for a long time (APOD February 4, 1999).
Let me suggest NASA has also known about electricity in space for a long time.
Dr. Anthony Peratt, a Plasma physics expert at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico has called Birkeland currents, "magnetic ropes."
Let me be clear, Dr. Peratt also calls them Birkeland currents. but he does refer to them as "magnetic ropes" in a seminal scientific paper titled: The Evidence For Electrical Currents in Cosmic Plasma, A. L. Peratt, IEEE Trans. Plasma Sci. 18, p.26 (1990). PDF format.
Why is this important you might reasonably ask?
Because when NASA first reported Birkeland currents the word they chose to use was...you guessed it: "magnetic ropes."
In a the official NASA news release, December 11, 2007: "A "magnetic rope" is a twisted bundle of magnetic fields organized much like the twisted hemp of a mariner's rope. Spacecraft have detected hints of these ropes before, but a single spacecraft is insufficient to map their 3D structure. THEMIS's five satellites were able to perform the feat."
It needs to be remmembered that Los Alamos National Laboratory is a U.S. geovernment agency and, of course, so is NASA.
So, these two governmental agencies signalled each other that, yes, the satellite probes had confirmed Dr. Peratt's main thesis in the 1990 paper.
Twisted Sunspots and NASA knows: Truth is NASA knows quite a bit.
But they aren't interested in embarrassing mainstream astronomy.
You can bet there were private conversations between NASA and Los Alamos.
(Champaign corks poped and flew into orbit -- O.K. just kidding.)
The Universe is alive with plasma and the electromagnetic forces that animate it.
The last people to know it are conventional astronomers and amateurs that comment on websites like Bad Astronomy.
You're right, there's nothing wrong with admitting a mistake. The real blunder is failing to admit a mistake after it has been pointed out.
And that is the current situation confronting the conventional astronomy 'community', they simply refuse to admit the mistake.
And as I stated off the top, mistakes happen in science. Making hypothesis that turn out to be wrong is part of science.
What is damnable is the refusal to admit mistakes.
I guess the problem is that astronomy got hooked on an all encompassing theory that gravity was the only 'force' of the 'Four Fundamental Forces' that shapes the large structures of the Universe.
Frankly, as Man's detection instruments get more powerful, sensitve, and farther out into space, the electromagnetic 'force' will only continue to be detected more and more.
So, the longer conventional astronomy holds out for their out-dated gravitational theory, the harder it will be to admit the obvious: Electromagnetism is a major force in the structure and dynamics of the Universe.
And conventional astronomy's ideology, and make no mistake about it, it is an ideology, will be exposed as fantasy.
The "big bang", "black holes", "dark matter", and "dark energy", all creatures of the necessity to prop up the gravitational model are coming under increasing stress, even as "black holes" are being pushed as a 'certainty' in this "Year of Astronomy."
But maybe, that is what they deserve, because they wear their arrogance on their sleeve.
Looking at the initial picture in the post, doesn't it look to be an electrical glow coming off the comet?
And this, of course, is exactly as theorized by Plasma Cosmology. The comet is coming from a low electric charge environment in the outer solar system in towards the Sun where the electric charge is greater which causes it to 'glow' as the electrical difference increases.
If conventional astronomy could acknowledge this electrical dynamic there would be no mystery.

"I appreciate the comments. Spinning is a plausible conjecture. There is, however, enough evidence in other forms to have convinced me…a mainstream "believer" for most of my 50 years…that the activity of comets is electric/plasma.
Such as…the activity of comets/asteroids very far from the sun; their peculiar interaction with the solar wind close in, such as the complete temporary "tearing" of the tail from the comet; the sudden disintegration of comets, but not at closest approach to the sun when the mechanical stresses would be greatest; the collimated antitail; the correspondence of the surfaces of comets with the appearance of electic discharge machining; the entirely anomalous - from the conventional view - behaviour of comet Holmes in 07-08. Near-space is the first step of getting the word out. Every in situ experiment and observation from satellites has confirmed electrical/plasma dynamics in near-space.
As the first commenter admitted, long time astronomers are revising their views because the evidence is so overwhelming.
The lame response that the comet is spinning shows how bankrupt some are in the astronomical 'community'.
