Reincarnation: Transmigration of the Soul
"O youth or young man, who fancy that you are neglected by the Gods, know that if you become worse you shall go to the worse souls, or if better to the better, and in every succession of life and death you will do and suffer what like may fitly suffer at the hands of like. This is the justice of heaven, which neither you nor any other unfortunate will ever glory in escaping, and which the ordaining powers have specially ordained; take good heed thereof, for it will be sure to take heed of you." -- Plato, philosopher, Laws: Book X, 360 B.C.
"And Pythagoras learned from the Egyptians his teachings about the gods, his geometrical propositions and theory of numbers, as well as the transmigration of the soul into every living thing." -- Diodoros, historian, The Library of History: Book I:98, 1st century B.C.
"For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John. And if ye will believe it, this is Elias, which was for to come." -- Jesus Christ, Matthew 11:13-14
"But I [Jesus Christ] say unto you, That Elias is come already, and they knew him not, but have done unto him whatsoever they listed. Likewise shall also the Son of man suffer of them. Then the disciples understood that he spake unto them of John the Baptist." -- Matthew 17:12-13
"Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God." -- John 3:3
"Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again." -- John 3:7
"He [Pythagoras] declared also that the soul is immortal and that there is a change from one body to another [reincarnation]. Wherefore he said that he himself had been before Trojan times Aethalides, and that in the Trojan era he was Euphorbus, and after that Hermotimus the Samian, after which Pyrrho of Delos, and fifthly Pythagoras." -- Hippolytus, priest, Refutation of All Heresies, 2nd century
"Favorinus says, when Plato read his treatise on the Soul, Aristotle was the only person who sat it out, and that all the rest rose up and went away." -- Diogenes Laertius, historian, Lives and Opinions of Eminent Philosophers: Book III:XV, 3rd century
"The soul that I am entered its present body at the moment I was conceived in the fall of 1947. I appeared from my mother's womb on July 15, 1948, in Schenectady, New York. That birth was probably one of millions I have experienced since I left my real home in the spiritual world. My mother tells me that when I was an infant, she would give me alphabet soup, and sometimes I would not eat it, but would just spell out words in the bowl. From that, I take it that I must have practiced writing in many previous existences. In this life, I recall always having wanted to be a writer." -- Michael A. Cremo, author, 1997

Oops, I've just burnt out a few of my optimism neurons.
ReplyDeleteQF,
ReplyDelete"Oops, I've just burnt out a few of my optimism neurons."
You're no longer optimistic about atheism?
Does that mean Plato's words have affected you?
Huh? I find that pessimism works better for thinking critically anyhow.
ReplyDeleteBlack hat thinking requires no optimism neurons, nor does white hat thinking. Leave that to the red, blue, yellow, and possibly green hat thinking modes...ugh, I needs to put on my white thinking hat right now.
ReplyDelete....you know what, the fact that I'm an atheist might be turning people away from my blog, so I've made a few changes to the wording descriptors.

So... do you buy into reincarnation?
ReplyDeleteIf so... why? (I think I know why, but I want to see if I'm right)
Jeffery,
ReplyDeleteAre you asking me or QF?
Sorry... Could have vectored that, couldn't I?
ReplyDeleteYou, Oils.
I'm not sure what you mean by "buy" into?
ReplyDeleteI think there is evidence for reincarnation.
If you look at what wise men have said from every nation on Earth you'll see that that's true.
It depends on if you believe in a soul or not. I mean, I believe in a soul, though I don't know of any of the specific evidence for reincarnation you speak of.
ReplyDeleteHeightened empathy and a history lesson under hypnosis is all it takes to lead people into believing reincarnation, or indeed that they were abducted by aliens or that they believe that they are being visited by gods or ghosts.
