The Svalbard Global Seed Vault

"Ahura Mazda warns Yima, the first king of men, of the approach of a dire winter, which is to destroy every living creature by covering the land with a thick sheet of ice, and advises Yima to build a Vara, or an enclosure, to preserve the seeds of every kind of animal and plant." -- Zend-Avesta, Fargard II, 1000 B.C.

Via Retardipedia: Svalbard Global Seed Vault. (Hat tip: Suzannah)

The Svalbard Global Seed Vault (Norwegian: Svalbard globale frøhvelv) is a secure seedbank located on the Norwegian island of Spitsbergen near the town of Longyearbyen in the remote Arctic Svalbard archipelago. The facility was established to preserve a wide variety of plant seeds from locations worldwide in an underground cavern. The Seed Vault holds duplicate samples, or "spare" copies, of seeds held in genebanks worldwide.
Deja vu all over again. At least some people get it.

Do you think this means the government puts weight in Dec. 21, 2012, Web-bot, or similar prophecies? OR are they doing it because they know that somehow their actions have infringed upon human beings' welfare (not a natural disaster but they see a man-made disaster coming)? What is the best way to prepare for a global disaster?

I think Libor Zicha has the right idea in Encounters at the End of the World. Keep a 20 kilo rucksack with a sleeping bag, tent, and raft ready to go at all times.

What about my first question? You didn't answer that.

I don't know...:P

The government covers possibilities. So they know that with all the BS about the date, this would be a convenient time for certain things to happen and others not to happen. That doesn't mean they will do anything, but contingency plans are what they do.
Be prepared! Y2K all over again. Probably nothing of any import, but as it has a momentum now, why would someone not use it or worse, anticipate it by striking beforehand?
The whole point of this blog, it seems, is that nature has far bigger weapons than even the USA. Trouble is, science has been discouraged from ascertaining what might happen and is aimed at asteroids, when the biggest threat is clearly the Sun. All the recent activity by mainly US Gov is aimed at gathering more evidence of Solar activity. But as they deny electrical involvement, the brain power applied is private, and controlled by the gov.
Not satisfactory.

Fungus,
While the sun is a danger over very long timescales, I would hesitate to say it's much trouble over, for example, a single lifetime.

Evidence holds that asteroid and comet impacts, as well as volcanism, are far more common than solar events.

Governments have over 14000 of these banks, this is just the biggest one. A real solution would be the establishment of several seedbanks of this size. Perhaps one for each continent.

As to the "whole point of this blog," evidence holds that it's a release valve for OiM's paranoia and condescending attitude.

Also, it lets folks say astonishingly stupid things (myself included) with a measure of anonymity (myself excluded).

The Nebular Hypothesis confirmed?

Planet-Forming disk changes quickly!

Jeffery,

Swedenborg and Kant were creationists and the Nebular Hypothesis is a creationist hypothesis.

Jeffery Keown said...

But there it is. We can see the thing. Is that not proof!?

How stubborn/dense/obtuse are you?

Infinitely so, I guess.

Jeffery,

Mainstream scientists in the article you quote say it takes millions of years for planets to form. They say in the article that the explanation you are assuming is only one of several possibilities. A wise man waits to see more before jumping to conclusions. Frankly I'm surprised that you are an advocate of creationist ideas but then I guess as long as an idea is popular that's all that matters to you.

Newton, for example, was very Christian, but I agree with most of his stuff. You can't comprehend that a hypothesis could be partially correct.

I do not let someone's religion or nationality or so-called "race" influence my opinion of their science.

Neither should you. The shadow of prejudice, that is...

All around us, gas clouds are contracting under the influence of gravity and magnetic fields into stars and worlds, you doubt your own eyes because Eric Lerner couldn't be "partially wrong."

Your black and white mis-characterizations are the mark of a damaged psyche.

Note, for example, our talk on Tiktalik. The find is wildly supportive evidence for plate tectonics and evolution. You reject it out of hand, because you think both are fairy tales. One can't be proof of the other, because it simply can't.

How did you put it? There can't be evidence because there's no evidence to be found or something like that?

You simply don't live in that world. There is no evidence that would falsify any of your pet scientists; Cremo, Velikovsky, Lerner, Peratt, Tassos, and the others just can't be wrong. I can almost feel your hands balled up in fisted rage when someone presents a counter argument. You lean into the screen, your breath coming in ragged gasps of anger as your fingers search the dark beyond the monitor's comforting glow for some printed matter that will provide a scathing counter-quote.

Me? I can let go of a theory as easy as anyone. Look at my turn-around on Abiotic Oil. I'm almost in your corner on it.

But you? No evidence can sway you... No one can turn you from your cranks and your half-wrong theorists.

Can they?

OIM,

This is going on since 1984. From Wiki:

The Nordic Gene Bank (NGB) has stored a backup of Nordic plant germplasm as frozen seeds in an abandoned coal mine at Svalbard since 1984. The NGB has deposited more than 10,000 seed samples of more than 2,000 cultivars of 300 different species over the years. In addition, seed samples from southern Africa (SADC) have been safely duplicated with the Nordic collection for some years. Both the Nordic and African collections are expected to be transferred to the Svalbard Global Seed Vault in the future. Since January 1, 2008 the Nordic Gene Bank is an integrated part of the newly formed Nordic Genetic Resource Center (NORDGEN).

And, we have seed companies all over the world doing the same thing for seeds of commerce.

The purpose of NGB is to save the genes that may become extinct in the wild, and may be, we might need to combat something, including alien gods of future, like Ahura Mazda II.

Wasn't there some doubt about the Magma Ocean? Didn't folks think the Theia Impact was BS?

Here I go again. Finding evidence.
